Pattern Cutting Skills – Skirt Design

October 21, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Pattern Cutting Skills – Skirt Design
Mary-Louise will teach you how to take a basic straight skirt block and turn it into almost any skirt design you like. You will make a pattern and a toile.
Ideally you will already have a skirt block that fits you from having completed the two day pattern cutting course to create a dress that fits your unique shape. However the skirt block is basic enough that it will be possible for you to start with getting this to fit you and go onto adapt it to another style.
You can expect through practical activities in both paper and fabric to learn the following pattern cutting principles
Closing darts and eliminating them to create a facing. To make changes to a basic facing to create a better fit and finish.
Closing darts and eliminating them to turn a straight skirt into an A line one.
Principles for creating waistbands or yokes.
How to change a dart into a seam line or other method of disposing of fullness such as a pleat or gather.
Turn a block into a pattern with the addition of seam and hem allowances, grain-lines, balance points and matching notches.
Make up a toile of your new design.
Analysing any fit issues that may have arisen from style changes. Please note the focus of the day is not about getting a perfect fit from a straight skirt as this should ideally have been done previously. If you do not start with a well fitting skirt block you may not achieve a toile of your changed design as well as a toile of a basic block but you should achieve the pattern design.

You will need to bring
Your skirt block or straight skirt pattern that fits you if you have one.
A pencil, preferably a retractable one and a Biro or fine liner.
Fabric to mock up a skirt in. Calico for a first draft basic straight skirt if you do not already have this, approximately 1m.
Fabric to mock up your newly designed skirt. If you would like to make a tailored style skirt calico or similar would be ideal and if you would like to make a fuller floaty style skirt sheeting is more appropriate. You are likely to need 1.5m – 3m depending on your size or style.
A basic sewing kit.
